We'll be at the usual place at the usual time and we hope you will too!

Carl will be Coaching, with Ed Hosting.

Here is Carl's plan for this Sunday:

Vocabulary - Synonyms

How to expand descriptive language in verse and chorus.

Here are five basic words that you might use in a song.

Can you write a line with a synonym for each of the listed words that helps you build a clear picture for the song?

Do not use these 5 words in the sentences or the song. Create alternate words that have similar meanings to use in a free write or a song. Another way to show meanings.

1. Road

2. Love

3. Blue

4. Grave

5. Happy

Rhyme Schemes

ABAB- 1&3/2&4 rhyme

XAXA - 2&4 rhyme 1& 3 do not rhyme.

AABB - 1&2 rhyme, 3&4 rhyme

AAAA - all lines rhyme

What have you used? Song examples...

Share new works

Here's what will be happening on Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m.

We'll be at the usual place at the usual time and we hope you will too!

Robert will be Coaching, with Chris Hosting.

Here is Robert's 2-part plan for this Sunday:

Part 1: all participants should select 2-4 lines from Amanda Gorman’s poem, recited at the 1/20/2021 Presidential Inauguration ceremony. Share the lines and tell what you liked about them, from the standpoint of appreciating the art of poetry. (You might want to have 2 or 3 sets of lines selected, to lessen the chance of duplication during the discussion.) Here is a link to the video and printout of the poem:

Part 2: Share, share, share! Continuing on from last week’s sharing of live music (inspired by Neil Young), everyone should come with some thing to share...a song, a poem, an anecdote, etc. (No focus on any certain songwriter or theme.) We need to hear your joyful voices!

We'll be at the usual place at the usual time and we hope you will too!

Robert will be Coaching, with Ed Hosting.

We’ll focus on “covers”. Robert will be going around the room to call on participants to play a cover that they like and then talk about what they like about the song and what made them want to learn it.

As an alternative to playing the song live, we’ll try to offer the option of pulling it up on YouTube to share with the group.

We will be training our ears again this week. If you have recently joined our Sunday gatherings, the previous lessons in the Short Takes series are available for viewing here.

It may be worth a few minutes of your time to explore what we're up to with this series. This is not a deep dive into music theory; we've tried to make it just enough to help you play well with others.

Jon Lee returns as Guest Coach. Here's what he wants us to share:

"Pick a Beatles song you like and relate to. Try to learn it. Bring in lead sheet with lyrics and chords. If it’s a hard one, that’s fine. We’ll just take them one at a time and break them down musically and lyrically, see what we can learn about songwriting and bring it to our own songwriting."
