Let’s Talk Country

Have you written a country song?( or religious). Bring your country songs you have written or you just love to play. Why? What?

“ In country music certain themes keep reoccurring. These themes must be treated unpretentiously and honestly. Your job as a country writer will be to dramatize blue-collar problems in a vividly down to earth way, rather than romanticize and falsify them.” Country music is simple. They are based in reality. Follows a Rhyme pattern.

Book: Al Kasha & Joel Hirschhorn,

If They Ask You, You Can Write a Song 1979.

Here are some classic country songs:

Here's what will be happening on Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m.

Chris will be Coaching, with Ed Hosting.

Lately, as part of my folklore studies, I have become fascinated by storytellers and their art. Storytelling blends tradition and improvisation in interesting proportions. I like to think of it as long-form songwriting, but on the fly.

Here are some examples I've watched lately:

Donald Davis

Sheila Arnold (to skip the introduction, go to 1:37)

These are long performances. You'll get the idea pretty quickly.

On Sunday, I will tell a story, The Traveler, that is about ten minutes long. We'll talk a little about storytelling and how it relates to songwriting and performance, and give everyone who's willing a chance to tell a story. The key thing is that it must not be written down, even as notes or an outline.

And we'll wrap up with our usual song circle. Needless to say, story songs a plus!
